Who was familiar with fiction writing will certainly know that writing is not something that you just sit down and start typing/writing. When you write you knowingly/unknowingly consider all the things you came across with during the life you lived and what you live know.
Fiction writing is not something someone can oblige you to do. You write, because you feel you want to! And if it is so emotionally important, it is worth to think a lot. If you are frank to yourself and you decided that you want to write about some specific things or something, you won't be able to prevent yourself from thinking/realizing it. Sometimes, you'll think the whole day; You'll dream about it when you use public transportation; Especially, when you take a shower you'll think and will laugh at yourself (Hopefully no one sees you there.); Every movie, every series, every book you read will remind you the scenery you want to write. The more you think, the more you'll improve the scenery. And thinking can't be restricted or be fit inside a specific time range.
You can develop a discipline by setting minimum time to write every day. But you are not restricted to. You can work more and probably in some days you will be willing to. In those days, you'll notice how much do you take it important. In some days, you would sweep away other critical jobs you have to accomplish. Even you can stay concentrated on a scenery for days long.
As a conclusion, you shouldn't forget that if you decided to make writing an essential part of your life, you are enrolled to a life time job.
